“The Wish.” A single, broken-hearted Cordelia is miserable after Xander had cheated on her with Willow in the prior episode. Even her friends mock her because someone who they view as a “dork” dumped her. Soon, she meets a new Sunnydale High School student named Anya who had just transferred to the school, and the two of them begin to hang out. One afternoon, Cordelia tells Anya that she wishes Buffy, who she blames for her troubles, had never come to Sunnydale. Anya then turns into a demon and tells her that her wish is granted. Immediately, Cordelia is in a parallel universe in which the Slayer, in fact, stayed in Cleveland. And the story continues from there in ways that are horrific, comedic, and hint at plot-twists to come later in the series. (Original air-date: December 8, 1998)
